Pokémon Analysis – Trick Room Setter 4: Comfey!

For a brief moment, after discovering it has access to Trick Room, Comfey really excited me. The pure fairy typing renders it weak to only poison and steel whilst its unique ability Triage gives a +3 priority boost to HP restoring moves. It’s when you begin to look deeper into the possibility of using this Pokémon where the wheels begin to fall off the hype train; base 90 and 110 in Defence and Special Defence respectively is almost completely ruined by a pitiful base 51 HP stat, whilst its base 82 Sp Atk and fairly shallow move pool renders Comfey fairly one dimensional.

The base 51 HP is really the killer here, but we’ll persevere; after all, we offered a set for Slowpoke in the previous analysis…

Set 1: “Ring a ring o’ roses”

comfey_by_kageto_okami-dabfspj
Comfey @ Mental Herb
Ability: Triage
Level: 50
EVs: 244 HP / 212 Def / 52 SpD
Relaxed Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
– Synthesis
– Trick Room
– Floral Healing
– Toxic/Helping Hand

Out of all the Trick Room setters I’ve covered before now, Comfey is by far the most vulnerable to Taunt meaning Mental Herb is an absolute must on this set. Thanks to its ridiculously low base HP, we aren’t left with too much space to invest in offence. Sadly this means a set without an attacking move is probably the most usable set you can get from a Comfey. Thanks to Triage, its base 100 speed isn’t a hindrance at all under Trick Room as Synthesis and Floral Healing gain +3 priority.

The main goal for Comfey is to successfully set Trick Room then aid its partners in dismantling the opposing team. Synthesis will keep Comfey healthy whilst Floral Healing heals the target by 50% of its max HP stat. The final move on this set is down to personal preference; Toxic can give you a win condition if a game comes down to Comfey vs your opponents last Pokémon whilst Helping Hand can increase the fire power of Comfey’s partner.

Despite the low base HP (have I complained about that yet?) Comfey is somewhat bailed out by its very respectable defences, allowing it to take a surprising amount of punishment…

The same moves as before with an EV spread attempting to capitalise on Comfey’s base 110 Special Defence. We have a little defensive investment as I find it fairly important to survive some form of Smart Strike from a Kartana…

Physical Calcs:

4 Atk Kartana Smart Strike vs. 244 HP / 92 Def Comfey: 132-156 (84 – 99.3%) — guaranteed 2HKO

4 Atk Celesteela Heavy Slam (120 BP) vs. 244 HP / 92 Def Comfey: 134-162 (85.3 – 103.1%) — 12.5% chance to OHKO

-1 252+ Atk Thick Club Marowak-Alola Flare Blitz vs. 244 HP / 92 Def Comfey: 108-127 (68.7 – 80.8%) — guaranteed 2HKO

Special Calcs:

252+ SpA Life Orb Tapu Lele Psychic vs. 244 HP / 172+ SpD Comfey in Psychic Terrain: 121-142 (77 – 90.4%) — guaranteed 2HKO

252+ SpA Tapu Fini Hydro Pump vs. 244 HP / 172+ SpD Comfey: 60-72 (38.2 – 45.8%) — guaranteed 3HKO

+1 252+ SpA Porygon2 Ice Beam vs. 244 HP / 172+ SpD Comfey: 53-63 (33.7 – 40.1%) — guaranteed 3HKO

252+ SpA Life Orb Drampa Fire Blast vs. 244 HP / 172+ SpD Comfey: 66-79 (42 – 50.3%) — 1.2% chance to 2HKO
252+ SpA Adaptability Porygon-Z Hyper Beam vs. 244 HP / 172+ SpD Comfey: 140-166 (89.1 – 105.7%) — 31.3% chance to OHKO

Alongside surviving attacks from 4 Atk Celesteela and Kartana, it was important to turn as many Special Attacks from the common bulkier attackers in the format into a 3hko; this way, if you can get the game down to Comfey vs one of these attackers, you’re able to toxic stall to victory in a worst case scenario.

Now… base 80 Special Attack isn’t unusable, it’s just very difficult to deal meaningful damage and survive powerful hits. If you want some sort of guaranteed chip damage to come out from Comfey, by all means add Draining Kiss (which gets the Triage priority buff) or Dazzling Gleam over Toxic or Helping Hand on the previous two sets; if you don’t care about taking hits and want a chance to deal some surprise damage however…

Set 3: “They all fall down”
comfey_pokemon_sun_pokemon_moon_by_tatanrg-daas79y
Comfey @ Fairium Z
Ability: Triage
Level: 50
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk / 0 Spe
– Synthesis
– Trick Room
– Floral Healing
– Dazzling Gleam

So this set is inspired by Gavin Michaels’ Mimikyu spread with the idea of outspeeding threats to our team and picking up a quick surprise ohko before the target can do too much to disrupt the team. Sadly, as good as base 100 speed is, it can only, at best, speed tie with max speed Salamence and gets outsped by Garchomp too. However, there’s still some interesting Calcs…

SpAtk Calcs:

252 SpA Comfey Twinkle Tackle (160 BP) vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Salamence: 242-288 (141.5 – 168.4%) — guaranteed OHKO

252 SpA Comfey Twinkle Tackle (160 BP) vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Garchomp: 228-270 (124.5 – 147.5%) — guaranteed OHKO

252 SpA Comfey Twinkle Tackle (160 BP) vs. 28 HP / 0 SpD Krookodile: 270-318 (155.1 – 182.7%) — guaranteed OHKO

252 SpA Comfey Twinkle Tackle (160 BP) vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Tapu Koko: 127-151 (86.9 – 103.4%) — 18.8% chance to OHKO

252 SpA Comfey Twinkle Tackle (160 BP) vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Kartana: 118-139 (87.4 – 102.9%) — 25% chance to OHKO

252 SpA Comfey Twinkle Tackle (160 BP) vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Drampa: 218-258 (117.8 – 139.4%) — guaranteed OHKO

252 SpA Comfey Twinkle Tackle (160 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Persian-Alola: 188-224 (109.3 – 130.2%) — guaranteed OHKO

Comfey can also act as a decent answer to Pheromosa, but if you want a Trick Room setter that doesn’t care about Pheromosa probably stick with Mimikyu!

252+ Atk Life Orb Pheromosa Poison Jab vs. 244 HP / 20+ Def Comfey: 133-156 (84.7 – 99.3%) — guaranteed 2HKO

180 SpA Comfey Dazzling Gleam vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Pheromosa: 150-176 (102 – 119.7%) — guaranteed OHKO

So there’s the Comfey sets! Honestly, I’m actually a pretty big fan of this Pokémon; I feel with its ability, typing, base stats (despite that HP!) and access to Floral Healing and Synthesis, Comfey has some potential to be viable in this format. But find out for yourself, trial one of these sets on your Trick Room teams and attempt to unlock Comfey’s potential even further!
